Course Description

Three hours lecture. Refinement of writing skills for more effective communications. Assignments to include routine and specialized correspondence, technical reports, and speech preparation and delivery.

Course Objectives

After completing this course, students will be able to:

  1. produce effective job application materials
  2. communicate science to a non-expert audience in writing
  3. communicate science to an expert audience in writing
  4. deliver engaging and effective science talks

Course Format and Materials

This class is delivered asynchronously via Canvas. The content will provide instruction in the form of short videos, readings, and structured writing exercises that will help guide you through drafting and revising papers, providing and responding to peer reviews, and evaluating personal progress through reflection essays.

Professional Development

  • The Application Review Process: In this roleplaying exercise, students act as the hiring committee for the imaginary food production company, McGuffin Eats. The purpose of this exercise is to help students build a conceptual model of the application review process before they design application materials.
